GILMANTON, NH – Our hearts are broken at the loss of our wife, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, Gloria Inez (Roberts) Munsey, 83, who passed away in the early morning of Monday, June 2, 2014 in the loving care of her family and the staff of Pleasant View Health Care Center in Concord, NH. Gloria was born in Sanford, Maine on July 4, 1930, the eldest daughter of Felton Sr. and Blanche (Hobbs) Roberts. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Maurice E. Munsey, of Gilmanton, NH, her daughter, Susan M. Roberts, and her husband, Neil, of Gilmanton, NH, her son, James J. Munsey, of Gilmanton, NH and her daughter-in-law, Jean Munsey, of Gilmanton, NH; siblings, Arvid Roberts and Felton Roberts Jr., of Springvale, Maine and her sister, Sylvia Gile, and her husband, Alden, of Alfred, Maine, her grandchildren; Megin Munsey, Ian Roberts and his girlfriend, Heidi Kimball, Aimee Munsey, T.J. Munsey, Erin (Roberts) Sanborn and her husband, Michael, Norton Munsey, Maxine Munsey and a great granddaughter, Emily Marie Roberts. Also part of her family who were loved by her are Audrey Woodard and Jean Moreau along with beloved nieces and nephews and their families in Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington State and California. Gloria was predeceased by her brother, Eldred Roberts, and recently her son, Thomas A. Munsey. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 1PM on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Gilmanton Community Church, 1803 NH Rte 140 Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H. with Pastor Chris Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Smith Meeting House Cemetery, Gilmanton, NH. Laconia—-Jeanne A. Perry, 77, of 30 County Drive and formerly of 16 Lindsay Court, died at the Belknap County Nursing Home on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. She was the widow of Robert A. Perry who died June 10, 2005. Mrs. Perry was born May 8, 1937 in Franklin, N.H., the daughter of the late Raymond and Beatrice (Lacasse) Laplante. She was a longtime resident of Laconia and had been employed at Shaw’s in Belmont, Star Market in Gilford and also at CVS in Belmont. Mrs. Perry was a devout communicant of St. Joseph Church, Laconia. She loved her family and enjoyed gardening and shopping. She will be truly missed by many. Survivors include two daughters, Janice Page and her husband, David, and Cheryl Nadeau and her husband, Thomas, all of Belmont; three sons, Michael Perry and his wife, Kathy, of Gilford, Doug Perry and his wife, Kimberly, of Atlanta, Georgia and Scott Perry and his wife, Bonnie, of Laconia; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Reginald Laplante, and his wife, Pauline, of Franklin and several nephews and nieces. Belmont—-Margaret E. “Peg” Normandin, 89, of Belmont, died at her home on Thursday, June 5, 2014. Margaret was born July 8, 1924 in Laconia, N.H., the daughter of the late Atty. Fortunat E. and Susie J. (Seymour) Normandin. Margaret resided in the Laconia area for several years before moving and working in Boston, Mass. She returned to her native community fifty-seven years ago where she was a Title Examiner for Normandin, Cheney & O’Neil for over fifty years. Margaret was a Member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1963-1969, served as Clerk of the Judiciary Committee and was Chairperson of the New Hampshire Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women from 1963-1969. Margaret was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Laconia. She was a member of the Belmont Heritage Commission, a past member and president of Altrusa Club of Laconia, past trustee of Notre Dame College in Manchester, past trustee of New Hampshire Catholic Charities, served six years as a member of the college advisory committee of the New Hampshire Vocational-Technical Institute of New Hampshire, was past president and member of the BPW, past Board Member of Easter Seals New Hampshire and served on the Belknap County Cooperative Extension Board of Directors. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Atty. Paul L. and Linda D. Normandin and her sister-in-law, Helen “Pat” Normandin, all of Laconia; five nieces and two nephews. In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her brother, Robert F. Normandin, in 1996. There will be no calling hours. GILFORD-Claire Lessard Smith, 75, of 31 Cyrus Lane died Thursday morning, June 5, 2014 at Genesis Laconia Center with her beloved family by her side after fighting a long, hard, brave battle with her health. Claire was born in Jay, Vermont December 7, 1938 the daughter of the late Geremie and Mary (Fillion) Lessard. She was the only person born in Jay, Vermont that year. She was a graduate of Laconia High School class of 1956 in which she remained very active with the class reunions. After raising her two daughters Claire earned her New Hampshire Real Estate License. She was a Realtor at Coldwell-Banker Steve Weeks Realtors in Laconia where she was a rental agent and a personal assistant. She had also worked for J. B. Maintenance in Gilford as an administrative assistant. Claire had a true love and zest for life with her family being her greatest joy. She will be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She enjoyed skiing, tennis, traveling, and entertaining. Claire is survived by her husband of 57 years James S. Smith of Gilford, two daughters; Jill Ellen Smith and her husband Bill of Gilmanton, and Heidi Ann Smith of Gilmanton; her sister; Rita F. Fortin of Laconia, her grandchildren; Ryan James Smith and his wife Alicia of Gilmanton, Arica Lynn Caldwell and her husband Jacob of Belmont, and Mitchel James Segalini of Gilmanton, her great-grandchildren; Jamison Ruger Caldwell and Colton James Smith. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings; Raymond, Roger, Joseph, Rudy, Gene, Alice, Dorothy, Madeleine, and Patricia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1PM on Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. Andre Bessette Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia. A time to celebrate Claire’s life and visit with her family will immediately follow the funeral mass at the Beane Conference Center, 35 Blueberry Lane, Laconia until 6PM. Gilford—-It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Richard John Foley son of Nellie and Richard Foley, who passed on June 1, 2014 at Fletcher Allen Hospital, Burlington, Vermont Richard was born in Hanover, NH in 1928. He graduated high school in Concord, NH and went on to study at Bentley College. After graduation, Richard served his county in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Trieste, Italy. He married Mary Alice Hillmer and they started their family in New York. He was a corporate officer for Dart and Kraft Industries and was transferred to Illinois. Richard always kept his ties to New Hampshire with a summer home in Gilford on Lake Winnipesaukee which was where he and Mary retired. During his retirement he was proud to be part of the Marine Patrol on the lake he loved. He also sat on the Gilford Zoning Board. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lou Baraw and son-in- law, Scot, and grandchildren Jake, and Jenna. LACONIA – Olive Esther Thompson, 85, of 25 Union Ave, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Friday, June 6, 2014. Mrs. Thompson was born on March 31, 1929 in Charlotte, Vermont, the daughter of the late Floyd and Alma (Parker) Sorrell. She was a member of the Association for the Blind. Olive enjoyed spending time with her friends at Sunrise Towers in Laconia. She was a longtime resident of Laconia and Vermont and had been employed at Wilcom. Survivors include two daughters; Linda Newton and her husband Jerry of Hinesburg, Vermont and St. Petersburg, FL and Dorothy Hubert of St. Petersburg, FL, five grandchildren; Amy Averill, William Suchoski, Lisa Durffee, Malanie Amoriello and David Mooney Jr, several great grandchildren, three sisters; Lucia Plante and Louise Plante, both of Charlotte, VT and Dawn Reynolds of Alburg, Vermont and her special friends; Dennis and Virginia Dearborn of Laconia, NH and Tina Goss. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by her husbands, Melvin Paro in 1955 and James C. Thompson in October, 2009 and a granddaughter, Alison Grieve. Belmont—Gertrude E. “Trudy” Jordan, 76, of 12 Cherry Street, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Sunday, June 8, 2014. Mrs. Jordan was born July 19, 1937 in Laconia, N.H, the daughter of the late Joseph and Doris (Wilson) Fowler. She was a lifelong resident of the Laconia/Belmont area and had been a resident of the Belknap County Nursing Home for a brief period of time. She had been employed as a LNA since 1968, working at the Lakes Region General Hospital and various nursing homes. She retired in 1992. Mrs. Jordan was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Red Hatters and was crafty. She enjoyed playing Mrs. Santa at Church and at Golden View Health Care Center and loved to give hugs. Mrs. Jordan is survived by two daughters, Wendy Lindsey of Belmont and Joanne Benoit and her husband, Mark, of Meredith; two grandchildren, Heidi Kimball of Gilmanton and Sean Kimball of Laconia; a step granddaughter, Haillie Bessonnett, of Meredith; one great granddaughter, Emily Roberts, of Gilmanton and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jordan was predeceased by her husband of fifty-five years, C. Cecile Jordan, on November 24, 2012, by four sisters and by a son-in-law, James Lindsey, in 2006. Gilford, N.H.—Barbara F. (Convery) Carye, 90, of Boston, Mass. and Gilford, N.H. died at her home on June 11, 2014. Barbara was born to the late Edward and Margaret Convery on January 10, 1924. She grew up in Maplewood Square, Malden, Ma and graduated from Malden High School. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII and afterwards worked at the State House in Boston. Barbara lead a full and healthy life. Barbara leaves her beloved husband of 67 years, Raymond A. Carye, and her loving children, Katrina Carye, Edward Carye and Barbara Hausman, and grandchildren, Meghan, Amanda, and Olivia Carye, Mark and Jared Hausman. Burial services will be private and a memorial service held at a later date. Manchester—Merle M. (Deragon) Cunningham Woodward passed away June 8, 2014, her 80th birthday, surrounded by her loving family. Merle was born in Milford, Mass., June 8, 1934, the only child of Aram Joseph and Helena (Menard) Deragon. She moved to Derry in 1944 and lived at Beaver Lake for fifty years. Merle was very active in the Derry Decca Club in the 1970’s. She worked at the East Derry Store and East Derry Memorial Extended Day Care. She was loved by many children and parents. Merle was a talented musician and played more than seven instruments- accordion, piano, banjo, mandolin and three types of guitars. Not being able to read music, she could pick up an instrument and play a song after hearing it once. There was always room at “Ma’s” table. Her motto was “Just add a little more water to the soup”. She always had a fresh pot of coffee brewing. Merle was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Salem, Mass. Merle is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Frank Burton Woodward, Jr. of Manchester; children, Darlene and Steven Flanders of Laconia, Leigh and Kim Woodward of Weare, Laurel and David Alger of Milford, Glen Woodward of Manchester, Andrea and Scott Bourassa-KiriaKoutsas of Hooksett, Lori and Gill Ortiz of Malden, Mass. and John Cunningham of Nashua; grandchildren, Danielle & Kevin Gagne, Nicolle and Edward Robitaille, Tiffany and Scott Norris, Brittany and Lester Emery, Molly and Eric Alger, Miranda Sanders, Derek Sanders, Rhiannon and Charles Poliquin, Christian Bourassa, Nicholas and Tara Cunningham, Amanda and Patrick Cunningham-Deegan, Robby and Lisa MacDonald, Shawn MacDonald, Brooke MacDonald, Sarah Woodward and Keith Woodward; great grandchildren, Richard, Gwendolyn, Alexandra, Gabriel, Shawn, Everett, Aiden, Kayla, Cayden, Boston, Madison, London, Kingston, Keegan and Sebree; sister-in-law, Irene Cunningham; many nieces and nephews of the Cunningham family; cousin, Mim Woodward; extended family, Robin O’Malley, Carol Anne Bigos, Carol Rodrigues, Melinda Smith, Becky Stoddard, Robert Nelson, Lina Sitton; her Frances Warde family and many others who called her “Ma” or “Grams”. LACONIA – Olive Esther Thompson, 85, of 25 Union Ave, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Friday, June 6, 2014. Mrs. Thompson was born on March 31, 1929 in Charlotte, Vermont, the daughter of the late Floyd and Alma (Parker) Sorrell. She was a member of the Association for the Blind. Olive enjoyed spending time with her friends at Sunrise Towers in Laconia. She was a longtime resident of Laconia and Vermont and had been employed at Wilcom. Survivors include two daughters; Linda Newton and her husband Jerry of Hinesburg, Vermont and St. Petersburg, FL and Dorothy Hubert of St. Petersburg, FL, five grandchildren; Amy Averill, William Suchoski, Lisa Durffee, Malanie Amoriello and David Mooney Jr, several great grandchildren, three sisters; Lucia Plante and Louise Plante, both of Charlotte, VT and Dawn Reynolds of Alburg, Vermont and her special friends; Dennis and Virginia Dearborn of Laconia, NH and Tina Goss. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by her husbands, Melvin Paro in 1955 and James C. Thompson in October, 2009 and a granddaughter, Alison Grieve. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at St. John Vianney Parish, 160 Hinesburg Road, South Burlington, Vermont. Burial will follow in the family lot in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington, Vermont. Laconia—John J. Giuffrida,82, of Laconia, NH passed away on Sunday afternoon, June 8, 2014 as the result of a tragic accident. His family was with him when he passed. John was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on October 19,1931 and was the son of Giuseppe and Orazio (Faro) Giuffrida. In 1955 he graduated with honors from Boston College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. In 1957 he married Jacqueline Masuhr of Haverhill, Massachusetts and they went on to have 3 daughters and a son. John began his career in the chemical industry working for Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI. He later returned to Massachusetts working for Cabot Corporation. He retired in 1993 as a Regional Sales Manager for Cabot Corporation in Annandale, N.J. John spent his retirement years in the area he loved most, the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. He had several hobbies including golf and fishing. Throughout his life he was also passionate about cooking and everyone always enjoyed his Italian family recipes. He was also known for his quick wit and good humor. John is survived by an older sister, his wife, four children and seven grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are private as requested by the family. Meredith—-Geraldine “Gerry” Marie Metcalfe, 88, of 153 Parade Road and formerly of Gilford and West Alton, died at Forestview Manor, Meredith on Friday, June 13, 2014. She was the widow of Francis “Frank” Metcalfe who died March 4, 2009. Mrs. Metcalfe was born April 26, 1926 in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of the late Richard and Theresa (Campbell) McCormick. She resided in Watertown, Mass. for many years before moving to Alton where she lived for thirty years. She was a secretary at Buckley & Scott for twenty-five years before retiring in 1983. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Linda Metcalfe of Billerica, Mass. and Gilford, N.H. and Bruce and Patricia Metcalfe of Medway, Mass. and West Alton, N.H.; six grandchildren, Jason Smith, Brian Smith, Francis Metcalfe, Jill Metcalfe, Michael Metcalfe and Matthew Metcalfe; 4 great-grandsons; a sister Paula MacAuley of Fla.; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Metcalfe was predeceased by a daughter, Denise M. Smith, in 1996. Gilford—–Dr. David W. Merrell, 89, of 71 Broadview Terrace, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Dr. Merrell was born February 21, 1925 in South Bend, Indiana, the son of the late Horace B. and Mildred (Lind) Merrell. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army, 3rd Infantry Division Medical Corp during WWII. He resided in Orchard Lake, Michigan for many years before moving to Gilford thirty years ago. Dr. Merrell received his Ph.D. degree in Clinical Psychology from Michigan State University. He spent several years in clinical practice at a large neuro-psychiatric hospital and for thirty years, was a consultant with Rohrer, Hibler & Replogle, Inc. (RHR), international psychological consultants to management. He managed the Detroit office of RHR, managed the Mid-West and Eastern regions of RHR and was Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors. His responsibilities included RHR’s publications, training and research. As chairman of the legislative committee of the Michigan Psychological Association, Dr. Merrell was a leader in obtaining the first certification law for psychologists in Michigan. He was licensed in New York and Connecticut as well. Dr. Merrell’s consulting experience embraced a wide range of industries, including automotive, chemical, publishing, insurance and utilities. He led the development of RHR expertise in family mobility studies (for prospective overseas assignments), life cycle and evolution theory of organization, multi-dimensional (matrix) organization structures, and RHR’s full field systems for organization analysis. He contributed to two RHR books and numerous RHR articles and journals and served as editor of RHR’s bimonthly newsletter for executives titled “For CEO’s Only.” Dr. Merrell enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, sail boating, motor boating, water skiing and snow skiing. He was a musician, playing the trumpet and was a “Ping Pong Champ”. Dr. Merrell was a member and president of the New Hampshire Music Festival, a member and president of the Governor’s Island Association and was a leader and Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a tenor soloist for numerous church choirs. Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years, Audrey Mae “Ivy” (Iverson) Merrell of Gilford, N.H.; a son, David Charles Merrell of Stamford, Conn; a daughter, Cindy Louise (Merrell) Savard of Fremont, N.H.; four grandchildren, Paul David Merrell, Jaimie Elizabeth Merrell, Andrew David Savard and Kaitlyn Mae Savard; one great grandchild, Violet Lynn Merrell; one niece and five nephews. In addition to his parents, Dr. Merrell was predeceased by a brother, Richard Merrell. There will be no calling hours. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 2:00pm at the Gilford Community Church, 19 Potter Hill Road, Gilford, N.H. Rev. Michael Graham, Pastor of the Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Raymond C. Wixson Memorial Garden, Gilford, N.H. Following the burial, a reception will held in the Church Hall. Flowers are welcome. Belmont—–Laurence Francis Kopka, 77, of 20 Spruce Drive, died at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Mass. on Monday, June 16, 2014. Mr. Kopka was born December 11, 1936 in Exeter, N.H., the son of the late Francis S. and Marguerite (Webb) Kopka. He was raised in Exeter and was a 1954 graduate of Exeter High School. Mr. Kopka resided in Franklin, N.H. for several years before moving to Belmont in 2002. He was a self-employed carpenter for over fifty years. Mr. Kopka loved family, playing cards and camping in Pittsburg, N.H. with his wife. He was well known as a woodsman, hunter and trapper and wrote articles for Fur-Fish-Game Magazine. Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Constant) Kopka, of Belmont; three grandchildren, Tawnya J. Simonds , Jasmine D. Schultz and Krystal Letourneau; six great grandchildren; a sister, Priscilla Cadieux, of Exeter and one nephew. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kopka was predeceased by a daughter, Dawn Marie Kopka, in 2004. There will be no calling hours.
