Gilmanton—– Melba Jean (Clifford) LaRoche, 84, life-long resident of Gilmanton, NH passed away on Wednesday, February 11th at the Golden Crest Senior Wellness Resort and Spa, Franklin, NH in the loving embrace of her family. Born on May 12th, 1930 in Gilmanton, NH she was the youngest daughter of the late Earle and Nellie (Ellsworth) Clifford. She attended the Gilmanton Academy and graduated from Laconia High School, class of ’48. She worked as an administrative secretary for Sterling Engineering and Scott & Williams, as bookkeeper for Weeks Dairy and 26 years with the US Postal Service, as clerk in the Gilmanton Post Office and last as Postmaster of the Belmont, NH Post Office. Melba’s longtime dedication to the Town of Gilmanton began with her family’s lifelong involvement in community service. Her mother taught school at two of the original schoolhouses and was librarian at the Gilmanton Corners Library. Her father was Road Agent for 22 years and her husband was Fire Chief and Commander of the Gilmanton American Legion. She held the positions of elected Supervisor of the Voter Checklist for 14 years, Library Trustee for 10 years and Trustee of the Trust Funds for 20 years. She also served as Deputy Town and School Treasurer, a member of the National Association of Postmasters, Beech Grove Cemetery Association, Gilmanton PTA, Fire Department Auxiliary and, many years ago, the Gilmanton “Coffee Club”. She was a charter member of the Gilmanton Ellis-Geddes-Levitt Unit #102 of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as Secretary for 53 years proudly supporting the needs of Veterans at the local, state and national level. She was an avid weather watcher and loved feeding the varied wildlife that visited her home in Gilmanton. Her favorite trip was “to the ocean” and she spent many, many wonderful vacations there with family and dear friends. In addition to her parents, Melba was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 34 years, Alfred E. LaRoche, along with her sisters Lois McClary, Ruth Stockwell and Evelyn Horan and brother Everett Clifford. She is survived by her three children; Candace Daigle and her husband Raymond M. Daigle of Gilmanton, Michael A. LaRoche and his wife Susan LaRoche of Hudson, NH and Stephan E. LaRoche and partner Amy Rice of Lower Gilmanton, NH. In addition Melba leaves her four adored grandchildren, Benjamin, Evan, Jacob and Victoria “Tori”, her extended family including Samantha and Jaycob Hamel and Ethan Rice; many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and dear, life-long friends including Virginia (“Ginny”) Stanley, Ned and Elaine Lawson (Bernard, ME), loved grand-dogs “Snoopy” & “Buckley” and many others with whom she shared love and laughter during her lifetime. She always considered herself blessed in her life with loving family and friends. She always had a kind word, positive outlook and a hand of support for all. There will be no calling hours. A spring interment and graveside service for the family and friends will be held at the family plot in the Beech Grove Cemetery. Laconia – Madeleine A. (Kingsley) VanHagen, 95, formerly of 22 Heritage Terrace, Belmont, passed from this life on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Genesis Laconia Rehabilitation Center after a brief period of failing health. She was born on April 25, 1919 in Whitehall, NY, the daughter of the late Charles and Alma (Guyotte) Kingsbury. She was a 1937 graduate of Whitehall High School and also was a graduate of St. Margaret’s House and Hospital in 1941. Madeleine was married to Charles VanHagen in February of 1944, living in Long Island, NY. They moved to Plymouth in 1958 and were active in the Plymouth Methodist Church as well as local community projects. Madeleine was proud to be part of the creation of the Pemi-Baker Home Health Agency in Plymouth and it’s first Chairman of the Board. Her true joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved any excuse for a family gathering. She retired to Belmont in 2006 where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles S. VanHagen of Laconia, one son, Philip K. VanHagen and his wife Jeannette of Belmont, two daughters; Sandra VanHagen of Belmont and Karen White and her husband David of Belmont, three grandchildren; Timothy VanHagen of Dallas, Georgia, Jennifer Green of Moravia, NY and Christopher White of Pembroke, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two sisters; Leona Marianiello and Mildred Kingsley and one brother, Charles L. Kingsley. LACONIA – John E. Mont, 92, of 102B Franklin Street, died Wednesday, February 11,2015 at Lakes Region General Hospital. He was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1922 at the family Homestead on Gilford Avenue in Laconia. He was the only child of the late Laconia Police Captain, Walter E. (Ted) and Evelyn O. (Piper) Mont. John graudated from Laconia High School in 1940 and on September 24, 1942 he joined the Army Air Force during World War II. The following year, 1943, he joined his combat crew. His position was as the ball turret gunner on the B17 “My Day”. On their sixth mission “My Day” was shot down over the English Channel on December 30th. The surviving crew memebers floated in the freezing water for three hours before being rescued by the British Air Sea Rescue. On April, Friday the 13th, 1944 on mission #11 , John was the engineer on “Wing Fury” that was shot down over Germany. He was captured and held at Stalag 17B as a Prisoner of War for 13 months. Stalag 17B was evacuated on April 8, 1945. The prisoners began an 18 day, 241 mile march to Branuau, Austria. John was liberated on May 3, 1945 and was reunited with his parents on June 5, 1945. He earned The Oak Leaf Air Medal, European Theatre Medal with one Bronze Star, British Gold Fish Club, The American Sea Squatters Club and The Caterpillar Club. On John and Elizabeth’s 50th Wedding Anniversary they traveled back to England, Germany and Austria. John had the chance to thank the British Air Sea Resuce as well as the Austrian people. On the march to freedom the Austrian people shared what little bread they had with the POW’s. John worked as a Hosiery Technician for Hunter Hosiery, Scott and Williams and Veritron. He was a longtime memeber of Laconia Congregational Church and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, Moody Beach, Maine, The Nubble Lighthouse and GoldenRod Kisses. He also enjoyed sitting on his deck overlooking Lake Opechee, watching and feeding the birds, and especially yard saling all spring, summer and fall with “his girls”. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Lord) Mont of Laconia. two daughters; Linda Ann Shaw of Laconia and Joan Marjorie Shaw and her husband Douglas of Laconia, with whom he made his home for the past 20 years, nine grandchildren; Suzanne, Kevin, Matthew, Nicholas, Jacob, Stephanie, Jessica, Sierra and Cheyenne, eight great grandchildren;Tianna, Connor, Derek, Miles, Ruby, Jackson, Kaiden and Jaiden, a sister-in-law; Marjorie Morin, four nieces and one nephew; Peggy, Pammy,Paula, Prudy and Gerry. In addition to his parents he was predeased by a niece; Patty and nephews; Ryan and Jason. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on June 6, 2015 at Bayside Cemetery in Laconia. John will be transported in a vintage World War II vehicle to his final resting place. All are welcome to attend the celebration of his life. GILFORD—-James Sheldon Smith, 78, of 31 Cyrus Lane died Sunday morning, February 15, 2015 at home with his beloved family by his side after a brief courageous battle with lung cancer. Jimmy was born February 20, 1936 in Laconia, the son of the late Bernard and Madelynde (Smith) Smith. A graduate of Laconia High School class of 1954, he played many sports excelling in basketball and was where he met the love of his life, Claire Lessard. After high school he went on to Brewster Academy graduating in 1956. A lifelong resident of Gilford Jimmy grew up adjacent to Lily Pond, and as a teenager he was known for his bike repair and fishing boat rental business. A soap box car derby enthusiast he was known as #38, the car to beat. Prior to his retirement in 1998 Jimmy was employed at Pike Industries, Inc. for forty four years. Among Jimmy’s many joys were vacationing, skiing, snowmobiling, and especially entertaining. Jimmy (Pep) cherished and loved his three grandchildren, they filled him with the greatest pride. Pep’s two great grandchildren brought him immense joy and never failed to put a huge smile on his face. Dad was the kindest most patient, loving, selfless person. To be his daughters was a true honor, to be his friend was a cherished gift. Jimmy is survived by his two daughters; Jill Ellen Smith and her husband Bill of Gilmanton, and Heidi Ann Smith of Gilford; his grandchildren; Ryan James Smith and his wife Alicia of Gilmanton, Arica Lynn Caldwell and her husband Jacob of Belmont, and Mitchel James Segalini of Gilford, his great-grandchildren; Jamison Ruger Caldwell and Colton James Smith, and his sidekick Gunnar. Laconia—–Evelyn Ann Osterhaudt McDonald, 94, formerly of Lexington, Mass and Center Harbor, NH, died February 18, 2015 at St Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in the company of her family. Evelyn was born in 1920 in Revere, Mass. the daughter of James and Lillian (Morante) Zirpolo. She graduated from Medford High School Medford, Mass in 1937. She began her secretarial career at Howes Leather in Boston, Mass. and was later employed by The Polaroid Corp. in Cambridge, Mass and MIT’s Lincoln Laboratories in Lexington, Mass. She joined The Mitre Corporation, in Bedford Mass. in 1959 as the executive secretary of the corporation’s founding president. After working as an executive secretary for forty-five years, she retired in 1985 and moved with her husband to her summer home on Squam Lake. Evelyn enjoyed golfing, canoeing and swimming. She was a member of Waukewan Golf Course, Squam Lakes Association and Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Evelyn spent winters in Bonita Springs, Fla. golfing and beachcombing. Survivors include; a sister, Loretta Winn, of Gilford, NH; her nieces Andrea Castelli and Adrienne Talamas, her nephew Neal Talamas; and five grand nephews and grand nieces. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by her first husband Howard G. Osterhaudt in 1969, and her second husband John E. McDonald in 2007, and her nephew Glenn Talamas in 2012. Laconia—–Thomas H. Kilgellon, 61, went home to be with the Lord with his loving wife by his side on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Lakes Region General Hospital. Thomas was born in Dania Beach, Florida on September 2, 1953 the son of Thomas E. and Helena (Thaler) Kilgellon. He has been a resident of Laconia since 1985. For a born and raised Floridian he certainly made New Hampshire his home. Thomas was a painter in his younger years. All of Thomas’ friends called him “Tommy”. He was a very funny man and loved to make people laugh. He loved to listen to music, shoot pool, darts, horse shoes, cards, target shoot, make candles, jewelry and paintings. Tommy loved his pets, Sam, Jack, Kippygirl and Simon and being out in nature either walking the dog or boating, swimming or picnicking. Tommy made friends out of strangers and was thoughtful enough to keep them. He will be missed by many as he was a very charming and charismatic man. Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Dawn (Moore) Kilgellon, of Laconia; his sister, Catherine Kilgellon; his sister in law, Shirley Wade and his Step Mother Carol Kilgellon and many nephews and nieces. Belmont—–Neil Raymond Noyes, Sr., 83, of Jamestown Road, died at his home on Monday February 23, 2015. Neil was born in Laconia on July 20, 1931 the son of Hilton H. and Evelyn (Hill) Noyes. He grew up in Winnisquam and moved to Belmont sixty years ago. Neil was a descendant of John Leavitt and Elisha Smith, two of the petitioners for grants of land for Meredith, now Laconia. Neil was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War on the USS Shadwell. Neil was a Boiler-Room Fireman for the Johns-Manville Corporation and the Quin-T Corporation. Neil enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, yard sales, growing his own Christmas trees and spending time at his camp up north. He was a former member of the Winnisquam Fire Department. Neil is survived by his wife, Elsie (Davis) Noyes, of Belmont; two sons, Neil “Butch” R. Noyes, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Belmont and Richard W. Noyes and his wife, Lorraine, of Orange Grove, Tx; six grandchildren, David, Michael and Desiree Noyes, Rachel Guyer, Don Cross and William Neal and several nephews and nieces. Laconia—–Thomas H. Kilgellon, 61, went home to be with the Lord with his loving wife by his side on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Lakes Region General Hospital. Thomas was born in Dania Beach, Florida on September 2, 1953 the son of Thomas E. and Helena (Thaler) Kilgellon. He has been a resident of Laconia since 1985. For a born and raised Floridian he certainly made New Hampshire his home. Thomas was a painter in his younger years. All of Thomas’ friends called him “Tommy”. He was a very funny man and loved to make people laugh. He loved to listen to music, shoot pool, darts, horse shoes, cards, target shoot, make candles, jewelry and paintings. Tommy loved his pets, Sam, Jack, Kippygirl and Simon and being out in nature either walking the dog or boating, swimming or picnicking. Tommy made friends out of strangers and was thoughtful enough to keep them. He will be missed by many as he was a very charming and charismatic man. Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Dawn (Moore) Kilgellon, of Laconia; his sister, Catherine Kilgellon; his sister in law, Shirley Wade and his Step Mother Carol Kilgellon and many nephews and nieces. Sanbornton—–George B. Hickey, Jr., 64, of Hunkins Pond Road passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. George was born in Cambridge, Mass. on February 3, 1951 the son of George B. and Evelyn (Crotty) Hickey, Sr. He resided in East Boston, Mass. before moving to Sanbornton forty years ago. George was a self-employed architect who practiced in NH for many years. He specialized in affordable housing design, working closely with many builders and non-profits including the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, Laconia Land Trust, Southwestern Community Services and Harbor Homes. Some of his projects included Lochmere Meadows, Mechanic Street School Affordable Housing Complex in Laconia, Mill View Apartments in Laconia, Marlborough Senior Housing, Veterans FIRST Transitional and Permanent Living facility in Manchester and the soon to be constructed Rivers Edge housing project in downtown Laconia. His awards included LEED Platinum for Homes at 100 Union Street in Manchester, LEED Gold for Homes at Pinecrest Apartments in Meredith, the 2010 Preservation Achievement Award for Lafayette School in Portsmouth and the 2007 Plan NH Merit of Excellence Award for Mechanic Street School Affordable Housing Complex in Laconia. He had a love for the outdoors whether it be working the land with his trusty blue New Holland tractor or digging up rocks as well as various holes and ditches with his Kubota excavator. He designed and built the home in Sanbornton that he raised his family in and which would become a ‘hobby’ of his up until the time of his passing. Those that understood him and enjoyed his dry humor, loved him. His selfless love and support for his family was all he cared about. He will be missed dearly by his friends and family. George is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Ann R. (Mitchell) Hickey of Sanbornton; two sons, Brendan J. Hickey of Sanbornton, Evan D. Hickey, and his wife, Rebecca, of Medford, MA; a daughter, Megan A. Hickey of Laconia; his mother, Evelyn Hickey of Essex, MA; a brother, James Hickey of Malden, MA; two sisters, Frances Minichello of Swampscott, MA. and Lynne Wilson of Seabrook, NH and several nephews and nieces. He enjoyed woodworking and was a talented craftsman. Robert was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of St. Jean the Baptist Society. LACONIA – Martha Louvenia Foreman Wood was born at home in Mt. Vernon, Arkansas on April 6, 1922, the daughter of Wade Foreman and Octavia Clark Foreman. Her sister, Wadene Hilliard, is still living in Arkansas. Martha Lou is predeceased by her brothers James and Earl Foreman, her sisters Eunice Duncan and Bernie May Robertson, and her husband of 63 years, Ernest O. Wood. Martha Lou graduated from Draughn’s School of Business, the University of Arkansas, and Chatham University. She was recognized as a Danforth Scholar and was an active member of 4H. She married Ernest Wood after a whirlwind romance, and waited for him to return to her from the armed forces after World War II. She had an active life as a Master Gardener through the Penn State University Extension Office, and was a member of PEO and the United Methodist Women. Trained as a microbacteriologist, she worked both for the government and for Dole Industries as a young woman. Later, she was the secretary at Highland United Methodist Church in NC, and was self-employed as a wedding dress reconstructor. She was also interested in cooking, sewing and quilting, volunteering, gardening, reading and was constantly learning new things. She was always active in her churches teaching Bible, working with children, and volunteering wherever she was needed. Martha Lou was known for her good humor and interest in people. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gilford, NH. Martha Lou died on Feb. 8, 2015. She is survived by her children: Victoria Wood Parrish, Charles Wood and his wife Melissa, and John Wood and his wife Denise. There are six grandchildren: Heather Parrish Valosin and her husband Eric, Kathleen Parrish Graham and her husband Billy, James Parrish, Kristin, Katherine and Henry Wood. She has two great-grandchildren: Micah Valosin and Austin Graham. Gilford—– Donagh F. “Don” O’Hara, 90, of Sprucewood Drive, passed away on Sunday March 1, 2015 at the Golden View Health Care Center in Meredith. Don was married for 67 years to the love of his life the late Dorothy C. (Meehan) O’Hara who died in 2014. Don was born August 19, 1924 in Brooklyn New York the son of Patrick G. and Grace M. (Marcel) O’Hara. Mr. O’Hara proudly served in WW ll in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded The Bronze Star for Heroism. After serving in the US Army, Don returned home, married, and went to work for Sears and Roebuck, while pursuing his degree from Hofstra College (University). He later taught Salesmanship and Marketing at Rutgers University. Don then embarked on a long, adventurous, career in the Oil business, beginning with Mobile Oil Company in New York as a salesman and District Manager. He then worked for Cities Service Oil Company (Citgo Oil ) as regional Manager in New Jersey and then Boston. He also was employed by Gibb’s Oil Company in Revere Ma. He was a past President of the Lakes Region Petroleum Board of Trade. In 1973 Don was honored to accept the position of President and CEO for Dow Oil Company, (Irving Oil) where he worked until his retirement. He remained a consultant for Irving Oil for many years. Mr. O’Hara was an incorporator at Lakes Region Hospital as well as The Taylor Home. He also served on the board at Indian Head Bank, in Laconia. Don was a senior member of the Laconia Rotary Club for more than forty years, and a long standing member at Laconia Country Club. In later years Don happily became a “Snowbird” where he volunteered at Naples Hospital, Naples Florida. He volunteered at Bolduc Park until his death. Mr. O’Hara was a communicant at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, Laconia, St. Anne’s Church in Naples Florida, and later, St. Joseph’s Church in Laconia. Don also loved his home, his flowers, golf, and The New England Patriots. Mr. O’Hara was a good friend and leader in the Community he loved and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. Don is survived by his four children; Donna and her husband, William, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Susan of Eliot, Maine, and Kathleen and her husband, Larry, of San Francisco, California; Kevin and his companion, Dana, of Seattle, Washington; and by his three adored grandchildren, Sally Szwed of New York City, Christopher DiNola of Kittery, Maine and Jason DiNola of Eliot, Maine; and his dear friends and Spiritual Advisors John and Sandra McGonagle of Gilford. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Peter and by his sisters Patricia O’Hara and Sheila Bennett. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Andre Bessette Parish – St. Joseph’s Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia NH. All are welcome to attend. Canterbury—–James A Bammarito, 86, of Robin Shore Drive died at Lakes Region Hospital on Saturday, February 28, 2015 with his beloved wife by his side after a long courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). James was born in Gloucester, MA on December 22, 1928 the son of Anthony and Katherine (Dandelo) Bammarito. He had been a long time resident of Canterbury for the past forty years. Survivors include his wife of forty years, Mary D. (Duggan)Bammarito, of Canterbury; five sisters and one brother of Gloucester, MA, a stepson, Lawrence Record and wife Maureen Record of Belmont a step daughter, Jacklyn Cuesta and husband Miguel Cuesta of Lowell, MA five grandchildren, Todd McLaughlin, James Agrusso, Shawn McLaughlin, Tina Fleming, Jason Record and eleven great-grandchildren. James was predeceased by his parents. James was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1947 where he studied carpentry and was the captain of his football team and ROTC. James owned and operated Reindeer Construction and had been a carpenter for sixty years. James cherished and loved his three great-grandchildren Tyler, Lizzie and Becca, they were his greatest form of love, enjoyment and happiness. His fondest memories were teaching them how to fish at his private pond. James leaves behind his beloved wife Mary who was his best friend and love of his life. Mary was James’s 24/7 care taker for the past fourteen years. They loved traveling, trips to Atlantic City, Shuffle Board tournaments in Sarasota Florida and dancing together to big band music that will live on forever. James’s kind voice and his loving last words, I love you now and forever Mary, will always be cherished. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Laconia—–Jane E. (Poire) Babin, Esq, formerly of 24 Birchwood Way, passed away on March 4, 2015 after a courageous and inspiring eleven year journey with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Jane was born in Laconia on March 24, 1956 the daughter of Leo “Joe” and Therese (O’Mara) Poire. In 1970 Jane graduated from St. John School (now Holy Trinity) and in 1974 from Laconia High School. In the years that followed, Jane went on to earn Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Business Administration as well as a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management from Plymouth State College. In 1989 Jane earned her Law Degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center. She then began a fifteen year distinguished career at Plymouth State University as a beloved and respected professor in the Business Department. In 2001 Jane received the Northeast Regional Teaching Excellence Award from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. She continued teaching even after her diagnosis but was forced to retire in April 2005 due to her loss of physical strength. At that point she began her second teaching career by demonstrating how one can live joyfully with ALS, by speaking at churches and medical schools about the human face of ALS, by participating in several medical research trials at Massachusetts General Hospital and by inspiring medical professionals to provide compassionate care for the terminally ill. Her book “Pearls in the Pond” (a collection of poems and writings written over the course of fifteen years) was published in 2007. During her teaching career Jane served on numerous committees at PSU and was admitted to the Bars in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania as well as the Bar of the United States Supreme Court. She was recognized with many honors during her career. In addition to the Northeast Regional Teaching Award in 2001, Jane was also presented an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by PSU in May of 2006 and the Silas H. Pearl Medallion for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Plymouth State University in 2005. Perhaps her greatest joy in life, though, came from watching with pride as her son Christian grew to adulthood. Jane is survived by her mother and step-father Armand and Therese (Poire) Bedard, her loving son Christian, two sisters Cynthia Mathews, APRN and her husband Philip of Campton, N.H., Marie Leahy and her husband Richard of Laconia, N.H and three brothers Patrick Poire and his wife Linda of Sandwich, MA, Joseph Poire and his wife Cindy of Santa Barbara, CA and Michael Poire of Corpus Christi, TX as well as nieces Jennifer Leahy, Erin Florek and Natalie Poire and nephews Jonathan Leahy, Christopher Poire and Nicholas Poire, as well as nieces Pam, Karen and Linda (daughters of her sister-in-law Doris Bolduc) grand nieces and grand nephews and many cousins, friends and PSU colleagues.
