Laconia—–Arthur A. Sorrell, 94, of 283 White Oaks Road and formerly of 58 Lyford Street, died at the Laconia Rehabilitation Center on Thursday, January 17, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Sorrell was born May 8, 1918 in Laconia, N.H., the son of the late Fred Archie and Laura (Caron) Sorrell. Mr. Sorrell was a lifelong resident of Laconia and graduated from Laconia High School . He was a M/Sgt. In the U. S. Army, serving for twenty years during WWII and the Korean War, retiring June 7, 1960 from Fort Knox, Kentucky. He had received the following awards: Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and Five Loops, American Defense Service Medal with Foreign Service Clasp, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Service Medal. He had been employed at Scott & Williams for thirty years and for General Electric for fourteen years, retiring in 1981. Mr. Sorrell was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. He was a member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laconia Post #1670 and was a member of the Wilkins-Smith Post #1 of Laconia. Mr. Sorrell enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, fishing, bowling, gardening and playing cards. Survivors include three sons, Fred A. Sorrell and his wife, Mary, of Laconia, Arthur E. Sorrell of Laconia and Gregory Sorrell and his wife, Ann, of Londonderry; four daughters, Rosemary (Sorrell) Poudrier and her husband, Maurice, of Laconia, Laura (Sorrell) Seeley of Laconia, Deborah (Sorrell) Brodbeck and her husband, Joseph, of Venice, Florida and Jayne (Sorrell) Rudberg and her husband, Glenn, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; seventeen grandchildren, Vickie (Jordan) Haynes, Michelle (Poudrier) Downs, Julie (Poudrier) Plante, Denise (Poudrier) Normandin, James Sorrell, Sandra Sorrell, Jessica Stitt, Brendan Sorrell, Alexandra Sorrell, Michaela Sorrell, Alicia Sorrell, Thomas Sorrell, Julia Sorrell, Andrew Sorrell, Melissa Rudberg, Kirsten Rudberg and Annaleise Rudberg; eighteen great grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Sorrell, of Pembroke; ten nieces and five nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Jane T. (Laska) Sorrell, who died in 2011 and by a brother, Laurent. Family calling hours will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 11:00AM at St. Andrew Bessette Parish – St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, N.H. Burial will be at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, N.H. LACONIA – Nancy Pashley Smith, 88, of Old North Main Street, died Friday, January 18, 2013 at Lakes Region General Hospital. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of Donald W. and Agnes (Hall) Hurd. Nancy moved to Laconia after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design. She worked at the Laconia Airport and also the Laconia Citizen in the advertising department. She then moved to White Plains, New York, where she worked as a Sound Area Advertising Manager for Westchester Rockland Newspapers until her retirement. She maintained a home in Laconia through most of her life and retirement years. She is survived by one son, James C. Pashley Jr. of Gardena, California, one grandson, Matthew R. Pashley of Gardena, California, one brother, Dr. John Hurd of Vancouver, Washington, a sister-in-law, Georgianna Smith Silva of Concord, two nephews; David Hurd of Vancouver, Washington and George A. Silva of Massachusetts, and one niece, Susan Tucker of Barrington, Rhode Island. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence J. Smith in 2007 and one sister, Jean H. Tucker. LACONIA – Louise Arlene Young, 88, of 70 Stark Street, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in her home. She was born in Laconia, the daughter of Earl G. and Louise V. (Hurd) Clough. She worked for several years as a food service assistant in Laconia, retiring as Food Service Manager from Sacred Heart School. After Louise retired, she enjoyed traveling with her best friend, Gloria Swain. Every year they went to Florida and enjoyed many bingo trips to Indian Bingo in Maine. She spent many hours with her grandchildren. She loved camping, cooking and family gatherings. Louise was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1670 Ladies Auxiliary in Laconia. She is survived by her son, Garey Hawkins and his wife Terri of Gilmanton, one daughter, Linda Fitts of Laconia, five grandchildren; Randy Fitts, Sherry Hawkins, Frank Hyslop, Melissa Bivens and Shawn Vaillant , four great grandchildren; Nicole Fitts, Jacob Bivens, Whitney Vaillant and Brynn Vailant, one great-great grandchild, Memphis Desbiens and one brother, Earl L. Clough and his wife Shirley of Laconia. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Young and one brother, Richard Clough. There will be no calling hours. LACONIA – Jeraldine Patricia Dean, 77, passed away at Lakes Region General Hospital on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, due to complications from treatments for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Jerri was born in New London, N.H., on March 5, 1935 to Helen (Bell) and Gordon Davis. She grew up in North Sutton, N.H., graduating from New London High School as salutatorian of her class. Jerri attended Colby Sawyer College and Plymouth State Teachers College, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Jerri began raising her family with former husband Arthur A. Dean in 1958, settling in Laconia in 1966. During her 33-year teaching career, she taught at both Mechanic Street School and Woodland Heights Elementary School. Jerri believed strongly in community service. Her activities included serving on the Laconia Education Association, cooking for the Salvation Army, serving as a board member for the Taylor Home, and doing hospice work. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church. Jerri enjoyed gardening, walking, swimming, reading, and journaling. But she was happiest when surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren. She delighted in making her swimming pool a special gathering spot for her family. Jerri also loved her dinner and movie nights with friends. She was a lifelong lover of animals, caring for every stray cat that came her way! Family members include: her son, Timothy S. Dean, and his wife, Michelle, of Laconia; her daughter, Cheryl A. Angus, of Laconia; her son, James M. Dean, and Nancy DePasquale of Beverly, M.A.; her son, John K. LACONIA – Martha E. Tasker, 76, of 406 Court Street, died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Laconia. She was born on October 10, 1936 in Mystic, Connecticut, the daughter of Herbert D. Jr. and Marie (Deans) Chapman. Martha was raised in the Belmont area and also traveled extensively as an Air Force wife prior to moving back to the area about nine years ago. Martha received her Master’s Degree in English and taught religious education around the world. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, friends and family. She loved playing cards, traveling and singing in the church choir. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Belmont and also a member of the Red Hat Society and was active with Catholic charities. She is survived by her two sons; Jamey Tasker and his wife Jill of New Baden, Illinois and Marty Tasker and his wife Teresa of Coppell, Texas, two brothers; Nate Chapman and his wife Arline of Pembroke and William “Bill” Chapman and his wife Pam of Laconia, four grandchildren; Collin Tasker, Andrew Tasker, Claire Tasker and Luke Tasker. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Maurice F. Tasker and one sister, Doris Chapman-Paquette. There will be no calling hours. LACONIA – Gudrun Gerna Magnusson of Gilford, passed away peacefully at Lakes Region General Hospital, surrounded by family and friends, on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Gerna, the daughter of Icelandic parents, Magnus G. and Maria (Olafsdottir) Magnusson, was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her family moved to Winchester, Massachusetts and summered at Lake Shore Park, Gilford, New Hampshire, where Gerna later settled. She was a graduate of Winchester High School, Massachusetts in 1944, received a degree in Physical Education from Sargent College, Boston University, in 1948; a degree in Elementary Education from Plymouth State College in 1954; and a Master’s degree in Education from Boston University in 1978. From 1955 to 2012, Gerna served in a multitude of leadership roles within the Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary Women Teachers Society including President of the Beta Chapter and Beta Alpha State as well as in numerous positions within the Theta Chapter. Delta Kappa Gamma is an International Society of Key Women Teachers whose purpose is to endow scholarships and promote professional growth for women educators. A fellow Delta Kappa Gamma member described her as, “a loyal, hard-working member at all levels of Delta Kappa Gamma…who knows, understands, supports and defends the purposes and ideals of our organization and is always ready to help wherever she sees a need.” Gerna began her teaching career in Hanover, New Hampshire as a Physical Education Instructor, K-12, and as the girls’ athletic coach for all sports from 1948-1953. A close colleague of hers said that, “Gerna was not simply a coach, but a dedicated, caring leader for her teams, spending may extra hours giving guidance and support to her girls.” In 1953, Gerna moved to Laconia where she taught Grades 3 and 4 at Harvard Street, Grade 5 at Pleasant Street School, and finished her career at Elm Street School. She retired in June of 1985 after 38 years of teaching. During her career, Gerna received commendations for Participation in Advanced Studies in Reading at Boston University, 1975 as well as a Mathematics Workshop at Plymouth State College, 1961. Gerna was very involved in her community. At Lake Shore Park, she had served on the Board of Directors for several years and was also in charge of the Recreation Program for both adults and children. One of her favorite programs was the “Christmas in September” event that included a visit from Santa Claus and gifts for the children who summered there. Over the years, she had been in charge of maintenance, care, and reservations and operated the park’s General Store. Gerna also served on the Town of Gilford’s Budget Committee and the State Retirement Board. In 1986, she became a certified real estate salesperson and had been active in Reed Elwell Realty since then. Gerna is survived by her adopted daughter, Leslie Magnusson, of Phoenix, Arizona and two great nephews, Matthew and Dylan. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Gudridur “Berta” Magnusson, and a nephew, John Alexander. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held later in the spring. A fellow Delta Kappa Gamma member described her as, “a loyal, hard-working member at all levels of Delta Kappa Gamma…who knows, understands, supports and defends the purposes and ideals of our organization and is always ready to help wherever she sees a need.” Gerna began her teaching career in Hanover, New Hampshire as a Physical Education Instructor, K-12, and as the girls’ athletic coach for all sports from 1948-1953. A close colleague of hers said that, “Gerna was not simply a coach, but a dedicated, caring leader for her teams, spending may extra hours giving guidance and support to her girls.” In 1953, Gerna moved to Laconia where she taught Grades 3 and 4 at Harvard Street, Grade 5 at Pleasant Street School, and finished her career at Elm Street School. She retired in June of 1985 after 38 years of teaching. During her career, Gerna received commendations for Participation in Advanced Studies in Reading at Boston University, 1975 as well as a Mathematics Workshop at Plymouth State College, 1961. Gerna was very involved in her community. At Lake Shore Park, she had served on the Board of Directors for several years and was also in charge of the Recreation Program for both adults and children. One of her favorite programs was the “Christmas in September” event that included a visit from Santa Claus and gifts for the children who summered there. Over the years, she had been in charge of maintenance, care, and reservations and operated the park’s General Store. Gerna also served on the Town of Gilford’s Budget Committee and the State Retirement Board. In 1986, she became a certified real estate salesperson and had been active in Reed Elwell Realty since then. Gerna is survived by her adopted daughter, Leslie Magnusson, of Phoenix, Arizona and two great nephews, Matthew and Dylan. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Gudridur “Berta” Magnusson, and a nephew, John Alexander. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held later in the spring. Jack C. Levergood March 30, 1917-January 21, 2013 Jack C. Levergood of Laconia, formerly of Tuftonboro, passed away peacefully at the Taylor Community in Laconia on January 21, five days after the passing of his wife, Anne Turko Levergood. He was 95 years old. Jack was born in Williamsport PA, the older of two boys born to Lester and Margaret Clark Levergood. His mother died when he was six years old, his father and his stepmother Josephine raised him primarily in New Jersey. As a youth, he taught swimming and was a member of the Sea Scouts. He graduated from Union High School in 1935 and then attended the College of Engineering in Newark, NJ. He worked for Western Electric in Kearny NJ during the day, while he went to school at night, earning his engineering degree in 1950. He married Anne Turko in 1942, a marriage that would last over 70 years. The young couple initially lived in a small apartment in Union. Jack took in his mother-in-law for the first several years of his marriage. During this time, he was building a house in Stanton, New Jersey, finishing it just in time to be transferred by Western Electric from Kearny to North Andover, MA. The couple moved to Haverill MA. Once in Massachusetts the couple became involved in volunteer work. Jack became a lifetime member of the Pioneers at Western Electric, also a Mason, and president of the Haverill YMCA. They bought a camp on Lake Winnepasaukee and Jack became involved as a volunteer at Huggins Hospital as well as a driver for Meals on Wheels. In 2002 Jack was presented with a National and Community Service Award for his dedication to volunteer service. As a Republican, he was a Platinum Honoree and Member of the Republican Presidential Task Force and a Charter Member of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, Library and Museum. He was a faithful member of the Melvin Village Community Church where he served as a deacon for many years. Jack had many good friends with whom he and Anne shared adventures, jokes, celebrations, golf, and sailing. He also enjoyed woodworking, painting, bird watching, and seeing Notre Dame lose at football. To his family and friends he was a kind and gentle man who made all feel loved. His nieces, Eleanor Pringle of Higganum Ct and her family, Pat Craig of Methuen MA and her family, Joan Churchill of Exeter, as well as his nephew Alexander Williams of Pueblo CO and his family, and many grand nieces and nephews will miss him. His very dear family friends, Carol, Dianne, and Laurel Luby, and his caregiver, Joyce Wood, also survive him. His brother, James, and his nephew, James Jr, predeceased him. The burial will be private. A celebration of Jack and Anne’s lives and marriage will be held at the Melvin Village Community Church on Saturday May 4 at 11 am. Anne Turko Levergood August 31,1917-January 16, 2013 LACONIA-Anne T. Levergood of Laconia, formerly of Tuftonboro, and loving wife of Jack C. Levergood for over 70 years, passed away peacefully at the Taylor Community in Laconia on January 16, 2013, predeceasing her husband by five days. She was 91 years old. Anne was born in Central City PA and raised in New Jersey, the youngest daughter and fourth child of Michael and Anna Turko. She graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1939. Having a beautiful soprano voice, Anne studied music with Earl Weatherford in New York and Loreen Hoodap at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. She sang in many choirs as well as solo work in churches and in theatre productions. She married Jack Levergood in 1942 and the couple settled temporarily in Union New Jersey while they built a house in the country in Stanton New Jersey. Anne took a job at nearby Ortho Pharmaceuticals and soon became executive secretary to the president. She remained in that position until 1958 when the couple moved to Plaistow NH because of her husband’s job relocation with Western Electric. They bought a summer camp on Lake Winnepasaukee in Tuftonboro. Once settled in New Hampshire, Anne became active in the Children’s Aid and Family Society in Haverill, and a Board member of the United Fund of Greater Haverill. In Tuftonboro she was a choir member of the Melvin Village Community Church, a board member of the Huggins Hospital Aid Association, serving as secretary and then treasurer. She also sang frequently as a soloist in local churches and with the Village Players of Wolfeboro. To her friends and family, Anne will be remembered for her many shades of beige, her warm hospitality, her beautiful photographs, her good taste in all things, her wonderful blueberry muffins, her wisdom, her beautiful voice, her many hats, and her playful sense of humor. She was predeceased by her sisters Helen and Teddy and by her brother Stanley. Anne is survived by her nieces: Eleanor Pringle of Higganum CT and her family, Pat Levergood Craig of Methuen MA and her family, Pat Grogan and June Wilshaw of Florida, Joan Churchill of Exeter, her nephew Alexander Williams of Pueblo CO and his family, and many grand nieces and nephews. Her very dear family friends, Carole, Dianne, and Laurel Luby, and her caregiver Joyce Wood also survive her. Burial will be private. A memorial service celebrating Anne and Jack’s lives and marriage will take place on May 4 at 11am at the Melvin Village Community Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the church. Belmont—–Teresa May Phillips, 96, of 292 Durrell Mt. Road, died at Belknap County Nursing Home, Laconia on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Mrs. Phillips was born June 4, 1916 in Canterbury, N.H., the daughter of Ernest & Laura (Fletcher) Lawrence. She resided in the Lakes Region area for many years before moving to Belmont in 1960. She had been employed at Globe Manufacturing in Pittsfield, N.H. for over 15years. She loved camping, fishing, hunting, playing bingo and was an avid cribbage player. She enjoyed knitting and crochet and was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Mrs. Phillips was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Laconia. She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Laconia Post #1670 and was also a lifetime member of the Laconia Rod and Gun Club. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Elliott of Loudon and Lamont Clark of Belmont; one daughter, Norrine Derusha of Loudon; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Sarah Decato of Canterbury and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her son, Joseph Elliott two daughters;. Clematis Pickard and Ella Bailey, four brothers, Lauren Lawrence, Ernest Lawrence, Lloyd Lawrence and Victor Lawrence; two sisters; Barbara Leonard and Ina Burbank. Sanbornton—Mildred “Millie”(Scott) Piscopo, 88, of Sanbornton, NH passed peacefully on January 23, 2013. Born January 1, 1925 she was the daughter of Robert and Elspeth (Taylor) Scott, who were originally of Glasgow, Scotland. Mrs. Piscopo was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, John A. Piscopo, her parents, and a brother, Robert Scott. She is survived by her three children, John A. Piscopo II of Boca Raton, Florida, James S. Piscopo (and wife Nicole) of Sanbornton, and daughter, Cynthia Piscopo Howland of Pompano Beach, Florida. She leaves four grandsons, Justin ( and wife Michelle) Piscopo of Sanbornton, Corey Piscopo ( and wife Kristin) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, J. Austin Piscopo of Sanbornton, NH and John Piscopo III of Boca Raton, Florida. She leaves also several nephews and nieces including Nina Contigiani Turner, Peggy Dea, Robert Scott, Richard Scott and John Harkins. Mrs. Piscopo graduated from Laconia High School and Empire Beauty School in Boston. She and her husband owned and managed Mt. View Cottages and Motel on Lake Winnisquam for many years. She was an accomplished and well known artist in the Lakes Region and was known for her New England oil paintings. She enjoyed several recent winters in Florida with family where she also perfected her use of water colors. Mildred was outgoing and known for her ever present smile and joy, and her love for her family. Gilford—–Alice Gagnon, 80, of 187 Morrill Street, died Monday, January 28, 2013 in her home. Mrs. Gagnon was born March 18, 1932 in Laconia, the daughter of the late Alfred and Dora (Camire) Dufault. She was a lifelong resident of Laconia and had been employed at Laconia Shoe Co. for thirty-two years. Mrs. Gagnon was a communicant of St. Andre Bessette Parish and was a former member of the Ladies’ Guild. She enjoyed crafts, reading, camping and taking care of the family pet “Princess”. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Gagnon, of Lancaster and Sandra Cole and her husband, Garry, of Emerson, Georgia; one grandchild, Joseph A.
